This is my favorite Kelley family Christmas cookie!! I think about this cookie all year long. I never had anything like this growing up. Down in Mississippi, we were more about pies and cakes for Christmas than cookies. But when I went to my first Christmas at Miss Pat’s house up in Maryland and I tried this cookie (among many of her others), I was hooked.

The presentation is just picture perfect, resembling little logs. Put these on a pretty Christmas plate and let them do their thing! Very simple to make and very delicious.

Nutmeg Yule Logs

Ingredients

Cookie:

3/4 cup sugar

1 cup butter, softened

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 teaspoon rum extract

1 egg

3 cups flour

Nutmeg for sprinkling on top

Frosting:

2 1/4 cups powdered sugar

2 tablespoons butter, melted

2 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon rum extract

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, butter, both extracts, and egg, and mix together with a mixer until fluffy and airy. Add in the flour and nutmeg and blend well. Separate dough into six equal parts.

Sprinkle a little flour on a flat surface and with your hands, roll and shape each piece of dough into a long rope. Diameter should be about a 1/2 inch thick. Slice rope into about 3-inch pieces and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown. Cool cookies on wire racks.

In a small bowl, add powdered sugar, butter, milk, and both extracts, and mix well. Spread icing on top of each cooled cookie log. Scrape icing with a fork to give a bark-like appearance. Dust each log with nutmeg and serve.

Nan's Notes: You can divide the dough into more portions if it makes handling easier. These freeze very nicely-with or without the frosting.
